Day of the African Child 2026: Focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) has announced the theme for the Day of the African Child (DAC) 2026: “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa.”
Commemorated annually on 16 June, the DAC pays tribute to the 1976 Soweto student uprising and serves as a platform to reflect on the state of children’s rights across the continent. For 2026, the focus on water and sanitation aligns with the African Union’s broader Theme of the Year 2026: “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.”

Why This Theme Matters

  •  Millions of children across Africa face daily challenges due to unsafe water, poor sanitation, and lack of hygiene facilities.
  • UNICEF estimates that over 190 million children are at high risk from water-related threats, including disease and climate hazards.
  • Inadequate WASH services contribute to child mortality, malnutrition, and school absenteeism, disproportionately affecting rural and vulnerable communities.

Objectives of DAC 2026
The commemoration seeks to:

  • Mobilize political commitment and resources for child-responsive WASH systems.
  • Integrate WASH into child-centred policies on health, education, and social protection.
  • Promote inclusion and participation, ensuring vulnerable groups such as girls, children with disabilities, and displaced children are not left behind.
  • Strengthen accountability, urging Member States to make measurable pledges toward universal access.

A Call to Action
The ACERWC emphasizes that access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is not just a development priority but a human rights obligation under the African Children’s Charter. The 2026 theme calls on governments, partners, and communities to accelerate progress toward equitable, sustainable, and climate-resilient WASH systems ensuring that every child in Africa can survive, learn, and thrive.
